What is GHS?
GHS is a globally harmonized system of classification and labeling of chemicals, which issued by the united nations. It is a normative documents, which shall direct countries controlling harm of chemicals and protecting human health and environment.

Purpose

  1. enhance the protection of human health and the environment by providing an internationally comprehensible system for hazard communication;
  2. provide a recognized framework for those countries without an existing system;
  3. reduce the need for testing and evaluation of chemicals; and
  4. facilitate international trade in chemicals whose hazards have been properly assessed and identified on an international basis.

A number countries or organizations developed laws or regulations, in order to reduce the harm of chemicals, and to enhance the protection for human health and the environment. Under this condition, GHS system of the united nations is issued, and becomes a guiding document on treating scientificly chemicals, which according with globally uniform standard. The purpose of this document is to, provide an internationally comprehensible system to describe hazard of chemicals, and enhance the protection for human health and the environment, provide a recognized framework for those countries to reduce the need for testing and evaluation for chemicals, and promote international trade in chemicals.

The GHS includes these primary technical elements, they are, harmonized criteria for classifying substances and mixtures, which according to their health, environmental and physical hazards; and harmonized hazard communication elements, including requirements for labelling and safety data sheets.

Avoid bringing different. The GHS sets forth three parameter as below,

  1. The GHS covers all hazardous chemicals. The mode of application of the hazard communication components of the GHS (e.g. labels, safety data sheets) may vary by product category or stage in the life cycle. Target audiences for the GHS include consumers, workers, transport workers, and emergency responders.
  2. The mandate for development of a GHS does not include establishment of uniform test methods or promotion of further testing to address adverse health outcomes.
  3. In addition to animal data and valid in vitro testing, human experience, epidemiological data, and clinical testing provide important information that should be considered in application of the GHS.
